Best Tips from a Dental Hygienist

Getting the information straight from the source is wise advice in any field. This is true for the dental industry as well. Speaking with a licensed Dental Hygienist is the best way to know whether or not your oral care routine is what it should be. At Premier Dental Center Seguin, we pride ourselves on being a source of knowledge and information for our patients. Below, we have compiled the best tips from a dental hygienist. We hope this gives you some excellent advice for getting and keeping a healthy smile.

Make Room for Improvement

Happy Dental Hygienist

Brushing your teeth may seem like a mundane, straightforward task. For the most part, it isn’t rocket science. There are some things you can do, however, to make improvements. The first thing to do is set aside your pride and recognize that we all can be doing better for our health. While most Americans have a regular brushing routine, 23% of Americans only brush their teeth a few times a week! It is essential to start your dental routines young. If you have children, giving them their first toothbrush as young as six months can help them develop excellent oral care habits. In addition, scheduling your child for dental appointments from the time they turn two years old will set them up for a lifetime of good dental health and hygiene. For adults, here are some tips we recommend:

  • Brush and Floss Twice Each Day. The best times to brush are first thing in the morning to remove bacteria that has been lingering in your mouth all night and right before bedtime to remove the sugar bugs from your day of eating and drinking. We also recommend flossing at least once, if not twice, each day. Flossing will reach the areas a toothbrush cannot and ensure a very clean mouth.
  • Brush for Two Minutes. Each time you start your dental routine, set a timer for two minutes. Dentists recommend this time as the optimal period to adequately clean your teeth.
  • Choose the Right Tools. Medium or hard-bristled toothbrushes can damage your enamel. Instead, opt for soft-bristled toothbrushes. Toothbrushes need to be replaced every 3-4 months, as their bristles will become dull and jagged and can cause enamel damage. If you have recently fallen ill, it is essential to replace your toothbrush as soon as possible, as bacteria can cause further illness. That bacteria will continue to live and multiply on your toothbrush.
  • Eliminate Sugar. There are many health benefits to eliminating sugar; most are for your waistline and overall health, but eliminating sugar is vital for your dental health. Not only does sugar increase your risk for diabetes and heart disease, but sugar leads to cavities and tooth decay. Bacteria love glucose, and the more glucose in your mouth, the more bacteria will lay claim to your teeth. Try choosing water over sugary drinks. If you have a sugary treat, choose chocolate over hard candies, as chocolate can be washed away and cleaned easier than stickier options.

See a Dentist Twice a Year

The best way to know the status of your dental health and hygiene is to get a cleaning twice every year from a licensed Dental Hygienist. A Dental Hygienist can give you a deep cleaning that brushing your teeth at home cannot. In addition, a bi-yearly visit allows your dentist to detect, diagnose, and treat any issues that could cause severe conditions if not checked. So, please visit us at Premier Dental Center Seguin or schedule an appointment. New patients will receive their initial exam, cleaning, and x-rays for only $59! We look forward to caring for your teeth!
