One of the most frightening times of year for dentists is Halloween. As candy runs rampant through the schools and our place of work, all we can think about is how many cavities we will see as a result. At Premier Dental Center Seguin, we love having fun, but there are some things you can do to help decrease your chance of tooth decay during All Hallow’s Eve.
Three Tips for Healthy Teeth on Halloween
As with most tips in life, staying healthy comes down to moderation. Go out and have a great time on Halloween, just be sure not to overdo it. Here are a few tips that may help:
- Choose Chocolate. Hard candies are a dentist’s worst nightmare. Sugar in this form lingers in your mouth and is difficult to wash away. The longer these hard candies are sucked on in your mouth, the more opportunity the sugar bugs have to feast on your teeth. In addition, sticky candy like caramel can be stuck in between your teeth for days! Even with brushing, it may be impossible to get all of the sugar off your teeth before a cavity forms. Your best bet on Halloween is to stick with melty candy, like chocolate. Chocolate washes down easily, melts within seconds, and still lets you enjoy your night out.
- Brush Your Teeth. You may be exhausted after trick-or-treating, but forgetting to brush on Halloween night is a big no-no. After eating candy, be sure to spend time brushing for at least two minutes, floss, and then follow with a good restorative mouthwash.
- Donate the Candy. Even for the biggest candy lovers, no one needs a bucket full of candy laying around. Not only does this affect your dental health over time, but added sugar to your diet can cause a host of other health issues – like diabetes, metabolic syndrome, fatty liver disease, and weight gain. After Halloween, donate the rest of your candy to an organization or a local dentist’s office. This one will send candy overseas to our Troops!
