In some cases, a dentist may need to recommend additional procedures to keep your mouth healthy and to keep disease at bay. One specialty we perform in our office at Premier Dental Center Seguin is endodontics. This specialty is the treatment of dental pain that involve the pulp (nerve) and the root of the tooth. Endodontists work hard to save your natural teeth so you don’t have to invest in restorative or cosmetic procedures down the road. The primary procedure offered by an endodontist is a root canal.

Who Needs an Endodontist?

Tooth pain should never be ignored, especially if it is a dental emergency. Our experienced dentists will be able to tell whether or not a tooth can be saved through endodontics or if a tooth extraction will need to be performed. There are some symptoms to watch out for when wondering if you will need to see an endodontist.

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swollen or tender gums that can accompany tooth pain
  • Tooth pain with any fever
  • Darkening of tooth enamel
  • Abscess or Infection

Root Canals

root canal x rayBack in the day, getting a root canal would invoke dread in most people. Nowadays, with the advancement of dental technology, root canals can be performed simply and with little to no pain. If you are undergoing a root canal procedure, our team at Premier Dental Center will work with you to make you comfortable by using local anesthetics and nitrous oxide. We also offer different techniques and uses of sedation dentistry. While no one wants a root canal, the ultimate goal is to save your natural tooth and eliminate tooth loss.

The process of root canal treatment frequently follows these steps:

  1. The dentist will need to see the damage to the tooth and identify any sign of infection in the surrounding bone with updated x-rays.
  2. A local anesthetic will be administered to numb the area around the tooth.
  3. The endodontist makes an access hole in the top of the tooth.
  4. The pulp is cleaned out of the tooth through the access hole.
  5. The tooth is sealed. Sometimes this can be done the same day, but often the dentist may wait and medicate the tooth for some time before sealing.

Other Endodontic Procedures

In some cases, additional endodontic procedures will need to be done. While root canals have a 90% success rate of eliminating infection and allowing the tooth/gums to heal, there are rare instances when the endodontist will need to reopen the tooth to determine why an infection or pain is still present – this is called Endodontic Retreatment.

If you are wondering if you need a root canal, an endodontist can perform a Pulp Vitality Test to determine how healthy the pulp (nerve) of your teeth is and whether or not a root canal would be necessary or successful.
